By Larry Habegger | Permalink |It is no secret that the cause of traveler’s diarrhea is usually contaminated food and water and that the scourge is more prevalent in less-developed countries. Guatemalan officials recently announced that fully 98 percent of the country’s water sources are polluted, mostly with human waste and chemical residues. There are 24 water treatment plants in the country but only 15 are functioning, purifying only 5 percent of the country’s potable water. Officials have called a national forum for November to address the issue.
