Russia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Securing airports and airplanes is no easy task, but in the wake of two suicide bombings that brought down two planes Aug. 24, all Russian airports were to have tightened security by Oct. 1. That same day Russian intelligence officers tested security at Voronezh Airport and succeeded in carrying fake explosives onto a Moscow-bound Polyot Airlines aircraft, even after alerting airport officials that a terrorist attack could occur at the airport. They also were able to sneak onto airport grounds through a perimeter fence and stroll restricted areas for almost an hour, and a third agent managed to slip a suspicious package aboard with a small bribe to a baggage handler. Clearly more work needs to be done.

Russia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Security has been tightened in Moscow as a result of recent terrorist attacks, including more thorough checks at Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports where all passengers must now remove jackets, shoes and belts and submit to body searches. New machines that can detect explosives have been installed at Domodedovo airport. Passengers at both airports must arrive three hours before their flights to avoid delays. Authorities have also begun removing newspaper vendors and other retail businesses from inside Moscow’s metro and within 80 feet of metro turnstiles. The move, which came into effect Oct. 1, is an attempt to thwart attacks on metro stations or on the rail system itself.
