Bhutan
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Ireland banned smoking in the workplace this year, including in pubs, and Scotland plans to follow suit next year, but Bhutan has done them one better by banning all tobacco sales throughout the country beginning Dec. 17. It is the first nation to establish a country-wide ban and is giving merchants a month to liquidate stock. Any tobacco products brought into the country for personal consumption will face a 100 percent duty. The fine for selling tobacco products after the deadline will be $225, a substantial sum to Bhutanese.
