Brazil
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Crime against tourists in Rio de Janeiro is not news, but a four-day spree Nov. 11-14 when 24 tourists were mugged was high even for Rio’s standards. Victims were from Argentina, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia. Authorities were left searching for what to do while police came under heavy criticism for failing to reduce such crime. Patrols were increased last month after an amateur video showed a gang robbing tourists in daylight, but that has not solved the problem. Also last month, a busload of Germans was robbed on the way to the city from the airport, and tw0 Americans in a travel agency’s car were robbed on the same highway. The best way to avoid becoming a victim is to leave all valuables behind when you leave your hotel.
