Greece
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A car with U.S. license plates was destroyed by arsonists in Vouliagmeni, on the south side of Athens, in what appears to be an attack to protest the U.S. government decision to refer to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as the Republic of Macedonia. A person claiming responsibility for the incident told a Greek newspaper it represented a “revolutionary struggle against imperialism and against the American low comedies, as well as against the Skopje incidents.” Apart from this attack there have been no significant outbursts of anti-Americanism resulting from the U.S. decision.

Greece
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Ignoring the wishes of the Greek government, popular opinion, and ten years of efforts by Greece to prevent the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia being called just Macedonia, the U.S. government officially decided to do so, referring now to the country as the Republic of Macedonia. As a result, demonstrations could occur at the U.S. Embassy in Athens or the Consulate General in Thessaloniki, or other places. Anti-American sentiment could be inflamed, and protests, if they occur, could become unruly.
