Guatemala
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Blocking roads as a form of protest has become common here, with the most recent case occurring Nov. 3 when some 10,000 veterans of the former “civil patrols” blocked access to the international airport and dozens of other roads to pressure the government to make good on its promise to pay compensation for their efforts. Lawmakers voted quickly to authorize payment, and the roadblocks were lifted late in the day. Travel on the country’s highways and back roads is dangerous because of increased banditry. U.S. Mission personnel are prohibited from using inter- and intra-city buses that resemble U.S. school buses because these vehicles are frequently the targets of violent robberies.
