Malaysia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. State Department reissued its public announcement cautioning against travel to the coastal areas of eastern Sabah state on Malaysian Borneo, citing past kidnappings of tourists from resorts, the expanse of open ocean between the coast and the offshore islands, the continued presence of the Philippine terrorist group Abu Sayyaf and unidentified criminals, “along with indications of a continuing threat of kidnap attempts.” The Malaysian government’s response was immediate, protesting the warning and claiming that security in the region is good thanks to intense police and armed forces surveillance by “sea, air and land.” A Malaysian official insisted that there was no intelligence to suggest “any imminent security threat in our territorial waters.”
