Thailand

Thailand’s restive south could spin into a full-scale insurgency if a solution isn’t found to quell the violence in the Muslim-dominated region. Insurgent attacks have plagued the area since January and the military had its hand in inflaming passions recently when it overreacted to a demonstration and caused the deaths of 85 Muslims by stuffing them in trucks for up to six hours. A Buddhist village leader later was beheaded in a revenge killing by Muslims. The insurgency was active during the 1970s and 1980s but has lain dormant since, until this year. In the wake of this violence, the separatist group, the Pattani United Liberation Organization, has vowed to take the fight to Bangkok, but whether it is capable of doing so is unclear.
