An additional 2,500 police officers have been posted in Rio de Janeiro to combat escalating crime against visitors. More than 1,200 attacks against tourists have been reported this year around the Copacabana district alone, and authorities are determined to get the situation under control. Police armed with rifles have set up checkpoints at various places around the city, and officers at a checkpoint on the beach are confident the situation will improve with their presence.
