A new law that will effectively prohibit smoking in all restaurants and cafes goes into effect Jan. 10. The ban was originally intended to begin Jan. 1, but was delayed to allow Italians to bring in the new year without facing new restrictions. The law permits smoking sections but only if they have floor-to-ceiling walls and a ventilation system, eliminating the possibility for most establishments. Many restaurateurs are unhappy with the law because it obligates them to report violators to the authorities.
