Mexico
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Shakedowns of Americans of Mexican origin have become so common that federal and state officials announce programs every year to protect them, but it didn’t help a family from Yuma, Arizona traveling to Michoacan to visit relatives. They stopped for a rest in Escuinapa and were accosted by four individuals who tried to rob them. The family fled but two were shot in the arm, and at the hospital they reported the incident to federal police. When the federal officers asked local police for assistance, they encountered suspicious behavior and found that the victims identified three of the officers as their assailants. This incident took place in the same town that is in the national spotlight for police corruption following the murder of a TV news cameraman who had shot video of the then-police chief with an alleged drug gang figure.

Mexico
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The border crossing at Nogales, AZ and Nogales, Mexico is expected to be extremely busy until Jan. 15, with delays likely around the clock because so many travelers cross during the holiday season. Authorities expect delays this year to be longer than past years because of construction on Carretera Internacional which leads to the Dennis DeConcini port of entry, and is one of only two north-south roads in Nogales. Hours of operation at Mariposa port of entry have been expanded in an effort to reduce inconvenience.
In other news, some 21 U.S. citizens have been kidnapped or disappeared in the past four months in the Nuevo Laredo border area. Two were murdered, nine were released, and the whereabouts of the other ten remain unknown. Most visitors to the area have few mishaps but express kidnappings for ransom are increasing.
