New Zealand
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |It is a good idea to wash off any chemical residues from sunscreen or cosmetics before spreading mud from sulfur mud baths on your face, two English tourists learned recently in Rotorua. They were relaxing at the popular Hell’s Gate resort when, like many other tourists enjoying Rotorua’s famous mud pools, they spread mud on their faces. Fifteen minutes later when they left the pools, they complained of pain similar to severe sunburn. Doctors told them the burns may leave permanent scars. Laboratory tests on the sunscreen the tourists had used showed the sulfur in the mud could react with two chemicals in it: ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate and benzophenones. The resort now advises visitors to wash off cosmetics before taking mud treatment.
