An attack on the U.S. Consulate General in Jiddah by militants affiliated with al-Qaeda killed nine and showed that the terrorist group remains a threat in the kingdom despite harsh crackdowns by Saudi authorities. No Americans were killed in the attack in which four of the five terrorists died. The Consulate is heavily fortified and guarded and presented a hard target, but the attackers managed to get into the entrance area before being slain by Saudi security forces in a quick gun battle. One attacker was wounded and apprehended. It was the worst terrorist incident in the country since June.
