South Africa
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A spate of attacks on hikers climbing Cape Town’s Table Mountain has prompted authorities to increase security on the mountain and to make crime prevention in the area a high priority. A Japanese woman hiking alone up Platteklip Gorge was stabbed three times and robbed; a British doctor was tied up, beaten and rolled off a ledge; and a group of seniors was attacked. Over the holiday season, additional police, extra conservation staff and volunteers will be posted on trails, and a “tourists in distress” campaign is being launched to assist crime victims. Authorities recommend hikers travel in groups of four or more, avoid the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak, and use the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden entrance where visitors have to pay an entrance fee because the fee keeps criminals away. A member of the search and rescue group that aids people in trouble on the mountain said Table Mountain road has become so dangerous his rescue team is reluctant to search for people at night.
