South and Southeast Asia

The tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake off the coast of Sumatra caused devastation throughout both regions and will have an impact on travel and tourism in coastal areas of many countries for at least the next few weeks. Sri Lanka, southern India, Aceh province in Indonesia, southwestern Thailand and the Maldive Islands were all hit hard, with Malaysia, Burma and Bangladesh experiencing lesser damage. Deaths were reported as far away as Somalia. Authorities have declared a national disaster in Sri Lanka, a state of emergency in the Maldives, and southern India faces a massive cleanup. Relief efforts are underway but officials worry that water-borne diseases could spread in hard-hit areas. Until the situation returns to normal, travelers should avoid non-essential travel to Thailand’s popular resort areas of Phuket, Phi Phi Island, Krabi, and other smaller islands in the vicinity, the southern and eastern coasts of Sri Lanka, coastal areas of India’s states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, the Maldives, and Indonesia’s restricted Aceh province and nearby islands.
