Spain
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. Embassy in Madrid reminded Americans that terrorist threats remain in Spain, citing continuing arrests of suspected Islamic militants and a series of eight bombings by the Basque group ETA recently. The good news, however, is that Spanish authorities believe ETA is nearing its end as a terrorist organization, based on counter-terrorism successes and the recent bombings that were staged with the clear intent not to cause injuries. Some authorities believe that ETA has already decided to abandon violence, but renegade elements within the group still pose a threat.

Spain
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Basque separatist group ETA, which had been quiet since the al-Qaeda train bombings in Madrid in March, detonated seven bombs in seven cities almost simultaneously on Dec. 6, the anniversary of the signing of Spain’s constitution. The bombings were announced in advance to allow authorities to warn people away, but 18 people were injured. The explosions occurred in coffee shops, parks and other public places and were believed to be a message that ETA could strike anywhere in Spain despite heightened security. The bombings appeared to be designed to avoid casualties because of the nationwide revulsion over terrorism.
