By Larry Habegger | Permalink |There’s another good reason to pay attention when using ATMs in the UK and elsewhere in Europe: criminals using scanners to steal bank card data at ATMs and then cloning cards are not just emptying victims’ banks accounts, they are also funneling cash into al Qaeda’s operations. According to French security authorities, bank card fraud in Europe has become a key source of funds for al Qaeda’s operations throughout the world. If an ATM appears to have been tampered with (a boxy appendage has been fitted above the card slot), confirm with bank staff that the machine is safe to use.
In other news, drivers on the London Tube’s Piccadilly Line will stage one-day strikes on Dec. 24 and Jan. 5. The line runs from Heathrow Airport through central London.
