Bosnia-Herzegovina
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. State Department revised its travel warning for Bosnia-Herzegovina to remind Americans that risks remain from localized political violence, landmines and unexploded ordnance left over from the civil war in the 1990s. Urban areas have been declared safe from ordnance and mines, but conservative estimates suggest that some 500,000 mines and other ordnance remain uncleared, and the location of some minefields is unknown. Remain on hard-packed surfaces and do not approach abandoned or destroyed buildings or orchards because mines may surround them. Families with small children should make sure children do not stray in these areas.
