Dominican Republic

Seventeen cases of malaria have been diagnosed in tourists from the U.S., Canada and Europe. The cases were reported in November and December and may be linked to Hurricane Jeanne that hit the Dominican Republic in September. The tourists had visited La Altagracia and Duarte provinces, areas considered malaria-free, but the hurricane swept over these areas with heavy rains and floods, possibly leading to increased mosquito breeding. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends taking chloroquine if traveling to these provinces or in rural areas throughout the country. The Dominican Republic reports about 2,000 malaria cases a year.
