Libya
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Having been off limits to Americans for two decades, Libya is emerging as an enticing destination for travelers interested in its ancient heritage. In a recent travel warning, however, the U.S. State Department reminded Americans that Libya remains on the U.S. Government’s State Sponsors of Terrorism List, and as such, may maintain residual contacts with its former terrorist clients. Recent security reports have stated that extremist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in the region, so the State Department encourages Americans to maintain a “strong security posture” by remaining aware of their surroundings. Given the low volume of tourism, and Libya’s clear interest in reentering the community of nations, it seems that the risk of such an attack would be low. Last June a U.S. Liaison Office opened in Tripoli, but there is no consular officer and only limited services are available to Americans.
