The ninth anniversary of the Maoist uprising occurs in February, and officials expect the rebels to mount a major attack against the government, especially since the situation is deteriorating, with the government pushing ahead with elections the Maoists oppose and have vowed to disrupt, and with the prime minister promising a crackdown. Tourists, however, have yet to be targeted beyond trekking groups forced to pay “taxes” to Maoists in regions they control. Follow local reports for bandhs, or strikes called by the Maoists, and heed warnings to avoid travel during these shutdowns.
