South Africa
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Crime against tourists in Cape Town continues to be a problem with several recent incidents. Two Polish men who had been in town less than 24 hours were stabbed and robbed by a gang of five men when walking to their hotel after a night out. The attack occurred on Buitensingel Street in the central business district, not far from the popular entertainment area of Long Street. A British businessman was attacked less than an hour after arriving when walking to his guesthouse after being dropped by a taxi. His assailant wielded a gun and knocked him to the ground, stealing his money and suitcase. A week earlier a Swedish man was stabbed in the neck during a robbery in Green Point. And several violent robberies have occurred on Table Mountain in recent weeks. Crime against tourists has escalated to the point that government officials are calling for a summit on the issue to find ways to make the city safer for visitors.
