China
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Bacterial meningitis has killed eight people in Anhui province in eastern China, raising concerns that the government hasn’t moved fast enough to control the outbreak and alert international organizations to the spread of the disease. Health officials in Hong Kong were seeking more information from Chinese officials after reports that the disease had affected schools in 11 cities, including the capital city of Hefei. During the SARS epidemic in 2003, China was criticized for its secrecy about the outbreak, which allowed the disease to spread. Officials in Anhui province have provided thousands of doses of vaccine to the cities affected, and officials in Shanghai are watching for cases, but none have occurred there.
