Greece
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Soccer hooligans have become a major problem in Greece, which now has a reputation as one of Europe’s worst places for soccer-related violence. The problem has become so bad that a recent match in Athens was called off before it began because of fighting among rival fans. Soccer clubs and sports officials have asked the government to take stronger action against hooligans, and the government is turning to the U.K. for assistance. England has made great strides against soccer violence in the past 20 years, and is offering its experience to Greece. The issue will not be resolved overnight, but improvements in security at soccer matches should help in the short term while permanent solutions are developed.
