Cases of dengue fever have increased throughout the country, with 13 deaths in January alone compared to average annual deaths from the disease of around 60. Dengue fever is a common viral illness in the tropics characterized by headaches, cramps, rashes and severe muscle pain. It is spread by the Aedes mosquito, which bites during the day. The best prevention is to avoid being bitten: use mosquito repellent, wear clothing that covers the arms and legs and sleep under mosquito netting. Dengue can be fatal if not treated promptly.
