Mexico
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Reckless drivers and careless pedestrians creating havoc in Mexico City’s streets prompted three women to start a movement aimed at instilling civility in everyday life. The group launched its grassroots public relations campaign in January with some 1,000 residents taking up positions at major intersections waving placards and handing out pamphlets to raise awareness among drivers and pedestrians alike. In 2004 almost 7,000 traffic accidents were reported, with 2,270 involving pedestrians, and traffic congestion increases every day. The need for increased awareness is clear from polls showing that only 33 percent knew that walking in traffic is prohibited and 31 percent were aware that sidewalks are only for pedestrians. Drivers of all sorts, but especially bus operators and cabbies, are very aggressive, and few appear to know basic traffic rules, or care.

Mexico
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A U.S. State Department public announcement alerting Americans to drug-related turf wars along the Mexican border created a diplomatic stir, with Mexican officials protesting the warning as exaggerated and U.S. officials releasing statements to clarify the notice. Despite the flap, there is no argument that violence over the narcotics trade has flared in northern Mexico as the government has arrested crime bosses and created a power vacuum. The vast majority of victims have been Mexican nationals, but some Americans have been caught in the violence. Tourists have little to fear from such troubles unless they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. The incidents have been far removed from Mexico’s principal tourist attractions.
