Nepal
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |King Gyanendra dissolved the government Feb. 1 for the second time in three years and imposed a state of emergency, stating that he would form a new cabinet under his control and restore peace and democracy within three years. Telephone and internet lines were cut off and most flights were diverted. The reaction to his move from politicians and the citizenrywill be seen in the days to come, but demonstrations could occur and unrest could deepen. The Maoist insurgents have called for a transportation “bandh,” or general strike, in western Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley February 3-5. Such strikes are usually enforced with violence, so be prepared to avoid traveling during this period. Transportation services to and from the airport are planned to be operating normally, but this could change with little notice.
