Northern Ireland
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Talks attempting to resolve conflicts between Protestant and Catholic political parties and reestablish a power-sharing assembly that has been suspended since 2002 dissolved into crisis when the IRA announced it was withdrawing from peace negotiations and rescinding its proposals to disarm. The move was a reaction to what the IRA called bad faith and false accusations by the British and Irish governments. The prime ministers of both the UK and Ireland have accused the IRA of stealing $50 million from a Belfast bank in December, and say such criminality has to stop. The crisis will not affect travel to Northern Ireland, but it does suggest that a political solution to the long-running conflict here will not occur soon.
