The first car bomb blast in the uprising in the Muslim south occurred Feb. 17 and raised further speculation that Jemaah Islamiah is involved in the terrorist campaign there against the Thai government. Until now, the incidents had included small bombs on motorcycles, but the use of a car bomb is an ominous sign that tactics may be shifting to cause greater destruction. The bombing occurred in a nightclub district in Sungai Kolok, a border town popular with Malaysian tourists.
