Venezuela
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A week of heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides in much of the country, killing 53 people, driving 21,000 from their homes and prompting a state of emergency in the capital of Caracas and nine states. The areas worst hit are the coastal areas in the north. In neighboring Colombia some 25,000 have lost their homes. If rains persist, more areas could become inaccessible.
In a crime incident, an American woman staying at La Parada hotel in Catia La Mar near the Caracas International Airport was robbed when three armed men robbed three people in the lobby, then forced the receptionist to reveal guest information and went to the woman’s room and broke down her door. They then robbed her of her luggage, passport and cash. They were reportedly seeking U.S. currency.
