A forest fire caused by a careless camper burned out of control for a week in Chile’s most famous national park, Torres del Paine, before being brought under control. The fire burned 55 square miles of the park’s 700 square-mile area, mostly grasslands and shrub areas and some forest, but never reached the park’s most popular places. Dozens of campers were evacuated and smoke obscured the park’s dramatic views. The fire started when a camper knocked over his camping stove.
