France
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A mysterious group calling itself AZF that threatened to bomb the French rail system last year has resurfaced with another threat. In a letter received by both the French president and interior minister March 24, the group warned of a “Madrid tragedy” in France but didn’t specify how that threat would be carried out or what the government would need to do to avoid it. The letter said the group would contact authorities again in May. Last year a sophisticated bomb hidden on the tracks between Paris and Toulouse confirmed the danger and led to a search of almost the entire French rail network. The group then suspended its operations but said it would return.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Paris’s Montparnasse Tower, at 59 stories one of Europe’s tallest buildings and a popular place for tourists to get aerial views of the city, has an asbestos problem. The building was constructed from 1969 to 1972, a time when asbestos was routinely used in such structures, and four floors have been rated with the highest level of contamination. These floors contain machinery and are off-limits to the public, but asbestos is also above false ceilings and in cable and elevator shafts. An engineer at the tower said there is virtually no risk of exposure to tourists, but the problem needs to be solved and officials are looking at two options: to evacuate and building and remove the asbestos over three years, or keep the building open and take ten years to clean it up.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Nationwide demonstrations and strikes are planned for March 10 to protest the planned overhaul of the 35-hour work week, despite pleas to avoid such actions until after the Olympic committee has chosen the site for the 2012 Olympic Games. Paris is believed to be the front-runner among contenders London, Madrid, Moscow and New York, and the Olympic committee will visit Paris March 9-12. French officials fear that the strikes could damage Paris’ chances. Transport unions have not said if they would join the strike, so it is impossible to predict how much disruption the strikes will cause.
