A group of eight Americans on a study-abroad program was attacked recently by five neo-Nazi “skinheads” in a racial hate crime following a soccer match in Madrid. Three of the victims were African-Americans and the assailants shouted racial insults during the attack. Two of the victims required medical treatment and all received bruises except for the three women who fled to find help. Such attacks are not common in Spain but they do happen. Many small fascist groups exist here and are free to express themselves, but they are unpopular with average Spaniards. There have been recent calls for the government to place stricter controls on neo-Nazi groups.
