Cases of dengue fever have increased significantly over last year raising concerns that the country could face a public health crisis when the rainy season begins and mosquitoes breed in earnest. The 2,769 cases reported in January and February represent a 75-percent increase over the same period last year. The central and northeastern regions are the most at risk because a new strain of the virus has been found in these areas. Dengue fever is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in Asia and the only prevention is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

Several recent accidents involving tourist boats in southern Thailand have prompted the government to assign the Thai navy the task of assisting tourists in special coastal zones. Naval officers will be responsible for tourists’ safety within 500 meters of the coastline and around major resort islands in the Surin Islands, Similan Islands, Khoa Lak, Patong, Koh Phi Phi and the Adang-Rawi Islands. The sailors will provide first aid and establish centers where accidents can be reported, and perhaps maintain a presence that encourages tourist boat operators to take safety precautions seriously.
