Ghana

An increase in violent crime against foreigners, including Americans, prompted the U.S. Embassy in Accra to issue a bulletin outlining the heightened risks and recommending ways to avoid becoming a victim. Crimes include highway robberies, vehicle break-ins, street crime and armed home invasions. Visitors should not travel outside Accra after dark, including in local transport known as “tro-tros.” Three U.S. citizens were recently robbed at gunpoint in a tro-tro outside Accra, and the driver was shot. Do not resist if being held up. Criminals seldom work alone, and resisting dramatically increases the risk of serious injury, as happened to an employee of an international aid organization when he intervened in a purse snatching in a café. Wearing jewelry and carrying a purse makes you a more likely crime target, and if you must leave anything in a car, put it in the trunk before going to your destination.
