The highway between Nairobi and Mombasa is notorious for banditry, especially at night, but police arrested some 400 suspects in several towns along the highway in a recent crackdown, and claim that travel along the road is now safe. Police will continue to patrol at night, especially in the 170 mile stretch between Machakos and Mombasa, the area most plagued by crime.
