Mexico
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The drowning of an elderly North Dakota woman at a beach in Cabo San Lucas is a reminder not to turn your back on the ocean. She was walking on the beach with her son and two friends when a large wave swept over them. The three others survived but they were unable to revive her when they pulled her from the water.

Mexico
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tourists in Cancun are facing a surge in petty corruption and extortion aimed at visitors, principally Americans, because the local government routinely lacks the funds to pay police and public servants. Perpetrators are taxi drivers, police or individuals posing as police, who demand immediate payment of fines for supposed infractions, usually when pulling over tourists driving rental cars. Sometimes the officers take the victims to an ATM to secure payment after threatening imprisonment. Visitors should never pay a police officer directly, should always receive a written citation if a violation has occurred, and should take down the officer’s name, badge number, patrol car number, and time and location of the incident. If you feel you are a victim of an extortion attempt, call the U.S. Consular Agency in Cancun or the U.S. Consulate in Merida.
