An increase in public transit fares produced protests by students opposed to the change and counterdemonstrations by bus and taxi drivers in favor of it. Some protests turned violent and had to be put down by large numbers of police. The demonstrations in Managua temporarily blocked access to the airport, and while most demonstrations have occurred in the capital, unrest could spread to other areas.
