By Larry Habegger | Permalink |May 8 marks the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, and to commemorate the event virtually the entire center of Moscow will be closed off for celebrations. Red Square, Nikolskaya Ulitsa, Manezhnaya Ploshchad and several other nearby streets will be closed to cars and pedestrians on May 8 and 9. Authorities will not permit demonstrations on those days and will be prepared to disperse any groups that attempt to gather. Some 24,000 police will patrol the city along with the military, and security will be tight. Foreign leaders who plan to attend include President Bush, French President Jacques Chirac, and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. Locals and visitors not participating in the ceremonies have been encouraged to celebrate in city parks.

Russia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Police in St. Petersburg have been robbing Finnish tourists in a repeat of a problem that flared in 2003, when diplomats from several European countries protested to authorities that police were preying on their citizens. At the time, on-duty police were the culprits and the situation improved after the diplomatic protest, but now the problem has resurfaced, apparently at the hands of off-duty officers. Uniformed police have been accosting tourists walking home at night, often from bars, demanding to see their travel documents, then stealing their money in the process. Authorities advise against walking alone at night, especially after drinking.
