The case of a British woman who has been in jail in Dubai since March 5 illustrates the importance of knowing the laws of countries on your itinerary. She was arrested at Dubai airport because of an error in her passport, and was then required to provide a urine sample. Authorities found traces of codeine in it. Codeine is banned here, and the presence of such a drug in the body is considered possession and carries a minimum sentence of four years in prison. Her family expects her to be released, but British officials cannot interfere with local law, and the case needs to make its way through the judicial system, a time-consuming process.
