By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Entomologists monitoring virus-carrying mosquitoes have trapped thousands in Jabiru, near popular Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, and identified Murray Valley encephalitis and Kunjin viruses. Both viruses are dangerous and Murray Valley encephalitis can be deadly. Kakadu National Park is one of the Northern Territory’s most popular attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Thus far no outbreaks have occurred, but visitors should protect themselves against mosquito bites. Places at risk include the Alligator, Daly, Mary and Roper river areas, all associated with coastal swamps and floodplains.
