A recent U.S. State Department warning about travel to Colombia reminds Americans of the many dangers here, including the risk of kidnapping by narcoterrorists, but it also states that violence has diminished significantly in many areas, including the urban centers of Bogota, Barranquilla, Cartagena and Medellin. According to government figures, homicides have declined 34 percent and kidnappings 56 percent since 2002. Violence in Cali and the surrounding area remains high, and much of rural Colombia remains dangerous because of conflict between narcoterrorists and the military. But officials are pleased that the U.S. warning has been softened, saying it reflects government successes against rebels and criminals the last few years, and they hope it will help tourism rebound.

Colombia is a dangerous country and Bogota is still a dangerous city. Be alert at all times and use common sense precautions.
I am planning a trip to Cali, Colombia in December. Although I am going with a friend, who is a colombian citizen, I am still a little nevous after reading all the warnings etc. Anyone have any more light to shed on my situation?
