India
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A film with the title “Jo Bole So Nihal” (Blessed is the one who says God is eternal), part of a Sikh religious and battle cry, has sparked outrage among Sikhs and prompted two bombings of crowded theaters in Delhi, killing one and injuring dozens. Sikhs took offense to the title and to scenes in the film that show characters entering temples without removing shoes or covering their heads, anathema to Sikhs. Theaters throughout the country withdrew the film for security reasons, and it was pulled entirely from theaters in the Punjab, the Sikh heartland. Officials do not expect further violence, but these sorts of religious tensions often erupt in unpredictable ways, so additional incidents cannot be ruled out.
