Authorities in Lagos have a novel method for cleaning municipal roads: they ban road travel on the last Saturday of the month to make way for cleanup crews, and police strictly enforce the ban. Throughout the country road travel is dangerous, especially at night, both in rural areas and major cities because of armed gangs. Public transportation is risky because of poor maintenance and driving conditions.
