Peru

The famous archaeological site of Machu Picchu is on the verge of being placed on the U.N.’s “at-risk” list because of damage from the high volume of tourism it receives. Officials at UNESCO have recommended tourist numbers be cut in half to prevent further damage to the World Heritage Site, and the government has proposed a $130 million master plan to restore the area. If the plan satisfies UNESCO officials, Peru will avoid the embarrassment of seeing its premier tourist site listed as endangered, and presumably the conservation effort will get underway. Farther south, in the Colca Canyon near Arequipa, another of Peru’s natural attractions where visitors come to raft one of the world’s deepest canyons and watch soaring condors, local residents blocked roads to demand a larger share of the revenue collected by the state from visitors. More than a thousand protesters shut down most of the roads through the canyon May 12.
