The city of Tashkent is being transformed without government explanation as many main roads in the city center have been removed or blocked off, some replaced by parks. Tramlines have been torn out and traffic has been shunted to side roads, creating colossal traffic jams and angering residents. The moves are believed to be designed to prevent assaults on government buildings and are viewed as a response to recent unrest in neighboring Kyrgyzstan that overthrew the government there. The city is home to 2.5 million people, many of whom are upset about the secrecy behind the changes and the absence of a plan.
