Brazil
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Rio de Janeiro state legislature approved a bill to build six-foot walls along some main roads to protect motorists from stray bullets after a gun battle between police and drug traffickers shut down the Red Line expressway. The shoot-out lasted several hours and many drivers abandoned their cars or reversed direction to escape. This was not the first such incident in the slums that overlook the city, and the proposed wall will go only so far to protect drivers. According to police, the wall may deflect bullets, but cannot prevent robberies when vehicles get stuck in traffic jams.
