France, Italy

The Frejus Tunnel, one of the main highway links across the Alps between France and Italy, is closed for at least two months following a fire that started in a truck carrying tires and burned for seven hours. The fire destroyed several vehicles and killed two people in the eight-mile-long tunnel that carries some two million vehicles a year. The nearest alternate route is the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which itself was damaged by a vehicle fire in 1999 and was shut down for three years as a result. The tunnel will no doubt be congested with the additional traffic.
