Germany
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Traveling with an outdated guidebook can lead to trouble, but the experience of a 79-year-old American tourist who got lost in Germany is something else again. As a boy he read over and over a book his father bought in 1914 called “Beautiful Bayreuth.” He always wanted to see the places described in it and finally made the journey with book in hand, only to discover that none of the attractions he had read about remained. His car got stuck in mud on a dirt track in a forest and rescuers went searching for him when he failed to return to his hotel. Although the Bayreuth he discovered wasn’t what he expected, he said it was beautiful.
