Kazakhstan: Horseback Bandits

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 28th, 2005 | Trackback

It may appear to be straight out of the Old American West, but in an effort to combat bandits on horseback, trains in Kazakhstan will soon be guarded by mounted police. Trains in the southern regions have been plagued by bandits who prey on trains when they stop at stations. Passengers usually step out to get some air and leave the windows open because of the heat. The bandits then ride along the train helping themselves to bags left inside, and race away where vehicles cannot follow. Plans call for three or four mounted police to work at each station. What will happen when the Mounties confront horseback bandits can be imagined by anyone who’s seen an old western.
